Pakistani officials say at least 11 people have been killed in sectarian violence in the remote northern city of Gilgit. An angry mob set fire to several government buildings and the home of a local official. Several people, including at least two officials, burned to death in the blazes. The riot started after unidentified gunmen attacked minority Shi'ite Muslim leader Agha Ziauddin on Saturday morning, critically injuring him and killing two of his guards. Hundreds of Ziauddin supporters then rioted, setting fire to government offices and attacking shops owned by Sunni Muslims. The Pakistani government has imposed a curfew in the town and called on the army to restore order. Militants from Pakistan's majority Sunni and minority Shi'ite Muslim groups have clashed for many years.
