Guests: Dr.Wakar Uddin, Ph.D. Professor, Pennsylvania State University Director General, Arakan Rohingya Union (ARU) Founding Chairman, The Burmese Rohingya Assoc. N. America Supreme Council, The Muslim World League Translation Summary: Dr. Wakar Uddin told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that the impact of the report on Rohingya issue is tremendous. The regular report to the OIC is not just going to the OIC cabinet, but the OIC Headquarters also distributes the report to its all 57 member countries where it reaches the ministries and presidential offices. Further, we send copies of the report to UN agencies, US State Department, US Congress, and White House, and countries such as Canada and some European Union member countries. Information from this regular report is used by the OIC and the Gambia at the ICJ court case and by the UN agencies and US Government in their policymaking on Rohingya issues. Global Muslim communities and interfaith organizations are also kept aware of the Rohingya crisis through this report. The potential recipients of the proposed cards appear to be Rohingya people because the other communities such as ethnic Rakhine and others do not have card issues. They all have National Scrutiny cards (red cards), etc. The reason for taking such initiative abruptly is strange. The junta could possibly be trying to allay the consistent international pressure to address the Rohingya issue. It may be a similar approach such as the junta writing to Bangladesh Foreign Minister on the day of the coup on February 1, 2021, that it is committed to the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their native Arakan. It could be a similar move. He said, according to reliable resources from the ground in Rakhine State, the meeting was not materialized due to the disagreement between the two parties on issues such as Arakan Army’s potential role in ethnic armed conflict in the country and the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). All the three official statements by the NUG are significant positive statements forward that did not happen before under any other government in Myanmar during the past 50 plus years. Everyone should welcome the statements which will be instrumental in solving the Rohingya crisis and peaceful coexistence of all the communities in Rakhine state with their full basic rights. I do not believe the statements are all that is. Actually, it is a good beginning and there will be subsequent developments and actions to follow. Things should move on through a stepwise approach, not everything in one package or one action, Dr. Wakar Uddin told VOA Rohingya Lifeline during the interview.
