Japan Seeks More Information on Pakistani Nuclear Scientist

Japan's Foreign Minister, Nobutaka Machimura, has asked officials in Islamabad to provide more information concerning a top Pakistani nuclear scientist's links with North Korea.

Mr. Machimura made the request on Thursday during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Foreign Minister Khursheed Kasuri.

The foreign minister has not yet responded.

Pakistan has acknowledged that nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan sold technology and blueprints to North Korea, Libya, and Iran. But Islamabad insists the government was not involved in Mr. Khan's activities.

Mr. Machimura also announced that Japan will resume annual development loans for Pakistan. The loans were suspended in 1998 over Pakistan's nuclear tests.

The officials met following yesterday's Asian Cooperation Dialogue Summit in Islamabad.
