State Minister for Home Sees Weapons "Conspiracy" in Bangladesh - 2004-04-03

In Bangladesh, State Minister for Home, Lutfozzaman Babar described the largest ever seizure of AK-47 rifles and other firearms in Chittagong as part of a "big conspiracy". He told reporters that there were credible reasons to believe that the weapons might have been smuggled into the country for subversive acts and destabilize the current government. Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina criticized those comments. Police and coastguard in a joint drive recovered a huge quantity of highly sophisticated firearms and ammunition from the jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Ltd (CUFL) at the southeast bank of the river Karnaphuli.
