A Two-Way on the Eve of  Ekushey February in Bangladesh - 2004-02-20

On the eve of Language Martyr Day in Bangladesh , our Dhaka correspondent describes the event just an hour and a half before midnight in Bangladesh from Shaheed Minar ( the Marytr's Monument) in Dhaka. Exactly at midnight , as a mark of respect for the students who laid down their lives while demanding Bengali as one of the state languages of the erstwhile Pakistan, the President of Bangladesh places the floral wreath on Shaheed Minar, followed by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. It may be mentioned that Language Movement of 1952 culminated into the independence of a democratic and secular Bangladesh which was vehemently opposed by the Islamic fundamentalists from Pakistan.
