Manik Saha , a Bangladeshi journalist, has been killed in a bomb attack in the southwestern port city of Khulna.
Police say unidentified assailants hurled a bomb at Manik Saha as he was leaving the city's press club early Thursday killing him instantly. Moments before he was in the press club and while living the press club on a rickshaw the bomb ws thrown on him.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
Mr. Saha, a reporter for the Dhaka based New Age and Sangbad newspaper, was known for his extensive reporting on crimes, smuggling and Maoist rebels.He was also a stringer of BBC Bangla Service.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at Mr. Saha's killing. The Prime Minister ordered an inquiry into the incident while the Opposition Leader condemned the attack.
Dozens of local journalists took to the streets to protest the killing. They called for a one-day general strike in the city Saturday. Awami League has called a dawn to dusk strike on Sunday
