Academy Award Winner Gregory Peck Dies - 2003-06-12

One of Hollywood's most beloved movie stars, Gregory Peck, has died. He was 87 years old.

The tall, handsome Peck was known for playing decent, courageous men. After being nominated for an Academy Award four times, he finally won an Oscar in 1962 for his performance in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Peck played the role of small-town lawyer Atticus Finch, defending a black man accused of raping a white woman.

His long career included such classic films as "Roman Holiday," "Twelve O'Clock High," "Gentleman's Agreement" and "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit."

Gregory Peck also conveyed a quiet dignity off-screen. Though he rejected being called a "do-gooder," he served as president of the Motion Picture Academy and was active in the American Cancer Society, the National Endowment for the Arts and other causes.
