6 Dead in Fresh Separatist Violence in Kashmir - 2002-12-11

Indian police say at least six people have been killed and more than 26 wounded in fresh separatist violence across Indian Kashmir.

The dead included four suspected militants and two civilians. Three of the militants were shot dead by security forces in the village of Gadool.

In a separate incident, 26 civilians were wounded in a hand grenade attack in Pulwama, about 50 kilometers south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir. Police say the militants intended to attack a group of paramilitary soldiers, but missed their target. The grenade exploded on the road, near the town's main bus stop.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but at least a dozen separatist groups have been fighting the Indian government since 1989 for Kashmir's independence.

Another three people were injured Wednesday when a landmine planted by suspected militants went off while being defused in the Kandi area.
