Bush and Jiang Agree to Work for Nuclear Free North Korea - 2002-10-25

The two presidents said both of their countries will work for a nuclear-free Korean peninsula -- and a peaceful resolution of the U-S dispute with North Korea over the weapons program.

President Bush also said that he wants to work on a common strategy with China, South Korea, Japan and Russia to convince Pyongyang to rid itself of all weapons of mass destruction.

The two leaders also discussed Iraq, another divisive issue for their nations. President Bush wants a U-N resolution that has - in his words - "consequences" if Saddam Hussein does not rid Iraq of banned weapons of mass destruction. China has a veto in the U-N Security Council and has been reluctant to authorize military action.

President Bush also announced at the news conference that Vice President Dick Cheney will visit China next year.
