Heat Wave Kills 390 People in South Asia

A relentless heat wave sweeping across South Asia has killed at least 390 people.

Reports from the region say temperatures hit 50 degrees Celsius in some parts of South Asia this week, parching fields, emptying dams and drying river beds ahead of the annual monsoon.

In India the scorching heat has killed more than 250 in the past six weeks. India's eastern state of Orissa was the worst hit, where almost 100 people were reported killed from the heat.

The month-long heat wave also killed more than 80 people in neighboring Bangladesh, while in Pakistan more than 60 people died in the past week.

India's weather department says the June-September rains got off to a weak start, but initial showers are now being reported across southern India and Bombay.
