Mirwaiz : Kashmiri Militants Must Join India-Pakistan Talks

Moderate Kashmiri separatist leaders from India are calling on Kashmiri militants to join peaceful efforts between Pakistan and India to resolve the territorial dispute.

The separatists also insisted they must be included in talks between the two neighbors under the 18-month-old peace process.

Delegation leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told reporters in Islamabad the issue of Kashmir has "come out from the battlefield and landed on the negotiating table."

The Kashmiri movement, he said, is fighting on different fronts and needs to become united. The militants, he said, "should join this process and support it."

He also said the decades-old proposed UN referendum is not the answer and new options will have to be found to resolve the Kashmir problem.

He made the remarks as his delegation ended its talks with Pakistani Pervez Musharraf and other leaders in Islamabad.
