The Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh , MA Syed on Saturday submitted to President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed a six-point proposal for reform of the Election Commission (EC), the constitutional body that conducts elections. The proposal, which includes introduction of electronic voting machine, deployment of army during municipal and city corporation polls and establishment of BCS election cadre for ensuring complete independence to the EC secretariat were submitted while the outgoing CEC made his farewell call on the President at Bangabhabanon Saturday.
Earlier on Thursday, the CEC told journalists that there were five points in the reform proposal. The additional point (number six) that demands bringing the Election Commission Secretariat under the full control EC, was included on Saturday, informed sources said. On his farewell call, after completing his five-year tenure, MA Syed stayed with the President a little over half an hour. The CEC drove direct to his residence at Gulshan after the meeting during which Syed was believed to have explained aspects of the six-point proposals and related situation he faced when discharging his duties as the CEC.
