India-Pakistan Peace Efforts Hailed

Indian and Pakistani newspapers have hailed Monday's declaration by the two countries that their peace process is "irreversible."

A Times of India editorial says the jury is still out on whether the two sides will live up to declared promises, but Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's visible sincerity in all he said calls for optimism. The Indian Express echoed the optimism.

Pakistan's oldest English-language daily Dawn said the fact that General Musharraf and India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh, met while their countries played cricket gave the peace process "popular legitimacy that should augur well for the future."

In Indian Kashmir, moderate separatists said they were willing to resume talks with New Delhi to end the long-running dispute over the restive region's future, but the hard-liners insisted they want trilateral talks involving India, Pakistan and Kashmiris.
