Thousands Demonstrate Against Musharraf in Peshawar, Pakistan

There has been a large opposition demonstration against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province.

Thousands of opposition activists chanted "death to dictatorship," and some of them burned an effigy of General Musharraf, who seized power in a bloodless coup in October 1999. The protest was spearheaded by the six-party alliance of Islamic hard-line groups known as the United Action Forum.

The forum began a countrywide campaign of protests against the general after he reneged on a promise to become a civilian head of state and quit as army chief by the end of 2004. General Musharraf said he went back on his word for the sake of stability and security of the country.
