Tamil Rebel Supporters Clash with Sri Lankan Soldiers

New violence involving Sri Lankan security forces and Tamil Tiger rebels has put a strain on the fragile cease-fire between the two sides.

A grenade was thrown into the office of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the northern town of Mannar on Saturday evening, killing one person and wounding two others, including a party political worker.

Elsewhere, farther north in the Jaffna peninsula, six people were injured when government security forces clashed with demonstrators who were protesting the killing of a Tamil Tiger leader. The leader, the Tigers' political chief in the rebel-held eastern region, was gunned down on February 7 along with five others.

The LTTE blames the Sri Lankan military for the killings. The government blames a breakaway rebel faction.
