NATO Defense Ministers Gather in France

NATO defense ministers have begun meeting in Nice, France, where the alliance's plan to train Iraqi security forces is high on the agenda.

After meeting with defense chiefs Wednesday evening, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he is seeing signs of more cooperation on Iraq from nations that opposed the U.S.-led war in that country. NATO is trying to implement a program to train about 1,000 Iraqi officers a year.everal NATO members opposed to the Iraq war, including France and Germany, have refused to send troops to Iraq, but said they could train Iraqi forces outside of the country. During the two-day talks, ministers are also expected to announce plans to expand NATO's peacekeeping force in Afghanistan and address the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
