Insurgents Kill Iraqi Election Official, Kidnap Guardsmen

Insurgents pressed on with their campaign to disrupt Iraq's upcoming national elections, killing political officials and kidnapping 15 national guardsmen on Friday. Gunmen abducted the guardsmen near the town of Hit during a roadside ambush. Insurgents have killed hundreds of Iraqi security personnel in the run-up to the January 30th vote. Earlier, insurgents killed an election supervisor in Baghdad -- the seventh election worker to be killed recently. To the north, insurgents ambushed and killed three officials from a leading Kurdish political party and killed a U.S. soldier in a separate attack. Meanwhile, a U.S. commander, Brigadier-General Jeffrey Hammond, said he believes U.S. forces will capture al-Qaida linked terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The Jordanian born terrorist is the Unites States' most-wanted man in Iraq and has survived several airstrikes aimed at killing him.
