Pakistan Police Clash With Shiite Demonstrators

Pakistan police have clashed with Shi'ite Muslim demonstrators who took to the streets of Islamabad to protest the death of one of their religious leaders in an apparent sectarian attack.

Witnesses in the capital city say police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of protesters, some of whom threw rocks at security forces. Shi'ite activists took to the streets of major cities across Pakistan after Friday prayers to demand the government track down the killers of prominent Shi'ite cleric Agha Ziauddin. The cleric died Thursday from wounds suffered in a shooting attack (in the town of Gilgit) last week. Pakistan has imposed a curfew and tightened security at mosques across the country in an effort to quell sectarian violence in the aftermath of the shooting.
