Baghdad Governor Shot Dead, 10 killed in Truck Bombing

A group led by al-Qaida ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has claimed responsibility for two deadly attacks today (Tuesday) in Baghdad that killed the provincial governor and 10 other people.

The claims, which could not be immediately verified, appeared on a website frequently used by insurgent groups.

Baghdad province governor Ali al-Haidari and a bodyguard were gunned down as they drove through the capital's Hurriyah neighborhood.

In a separate attack, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-filled tanker into a security checkpoint near Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone, killing at least 10 people and wounding 60 others.

Also today, three American soldiers were killed and two wounded in a bomb attack in Baghdad. Elsewhere, another U.S. soldier and a Marine also were killed.
