Geologist Dr. Aftab Alam Khan Analyzes Tsunami

Dr. Aftab Alam Khan, professor of geology at Dhaka University says the tsunami’s effect was not severe in Bangladesh’s coastline due to the sedimentation in the Bay of Bengal.

He explained that about 2.4 to 2.5 million tons of sediment that comes from the Himalayan region is deposited in the Bay of Bengal annually. A lot of the sediment remains suspended in the water and therefore making the density of water of Bay of Bengal heavier than the density of water of Indian Ocean. As a result, the movement of tsunami water did not hit Bangladesh coastline severely.
