US Hails 'Historic' Bus Service Across Divided Kashmir

The United States has hailed Kashmiris and the leaders of India and Pakistan for the successful re-opening of a trans-Kashmir bus route, calling it a historic moment.

U.S. Ambassador to India David Mulford said New Delhi and Islamabad will continue to have the strong support of the United States as they resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue.

His statement came shortly after two groups of Indian and Pakistani Kashmiris walked over the Kaman Bridge today (Thursday), crossing the military Line of Control that has divided them for almost 60 years.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said "the caravan of peace has started and nothing can stop it."

In Islamabad, Pakistan's information minister (Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed) delivered a statement on behalf of President Pervez Musharraf, saying the service is a step towards alleviating the sufferings of divided families.
