BENGALI HINDU FESTIVAL CELEBRATED - 2002-10-15

The biggest festival of the Bengali Hindus, Durga Puja was celeberated in Bangladesh and in the Indian state of West Bengal in a festive mood. The celeberation began five days ago. It was a national and state holiday in Bangladesh and West Bengal. At the end of the festival the statue of Goddess Durga is tradionally immersed in a river. Durga is considered, amongst Hindus, as a symbol of motherhood who is kind but fearless. The Bijoya Dashami or the day of immersion reinforces the bond between various generations and when people visit each other's house offering sweets and exchaning greetings.
