Monideepa Bagchi Speaks to VOA About Her Dance Company Srishti


Monideepa Bagchi had her initial dance training in Bharatnayam and Manipuri styles. She started learning dance at the age of six from Naresh Kumar and completed a six year course on Bharatnyam from 'Prayag Sangit Prabhakar'. She received one year training in Odissi dance from Guru Murali Dhar Majhi. She also learnt khathakali from Guru Govindan Kutty.

After having extensive training in classical dances, Manideepa joined the Ananda Shankar Center for Performing Arts (ASCPA) Kolkata as a member and then worked as a faculty and remained attached to it for fourteen years. She traveled and performed with the troupe in almost all the important cities of the world.

In 1992 Monideepa left ASCPA and founded SRISHTI, her own creative dance center. She created her own style which she calls MADHURYA and trains her students in that style of dancing. She recently came to the United States to direct and choreograph the closing ceremony of North America Bengali Convention held in San Jose, California, during the first week of July, 2009.

In an interview with Voice of America, Monideepa Bagchi spoke about her dance style, her company and other issues.
