Justice MA Aziz resigned from the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Sunday citing a major political alliance's lack of confidence in him and to avert further political unrest in the country.
He was already on a three-month leave of absence that began in November. Opposition parties had accused him of bias.
Aziz said Sunday that he was stepping down to help create an environment acceptable to all political parties.
