Iranian President Mohamad Khatami says his country will never give up its nuclear program, which he says is for peaceful purposes. Mr. Khatami says Iran could also go back on its pledge to suspend uranium enrichment activities if the Tehran government feels that Britain, France and Germany are not living up to the promises they made to secure that pledge. The three European countries pledged economic aid to Iran in return for it giving up the program. Mr. Khatami says his country is being subjected to psychological warfare by other countries threatening it with attack -- an implicit reference to the United States which says Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon.
