The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the government and the Election Commission cannot hold election for the 45 seats reserved for women in the Parliament until February 23. On that day there will be a hearing of a writ petition challenging the election process.
Justice MA Matin and Justice AFM Abdur Rahman passed the order on a petition filed by 13 women's groups seeking injunction. The groups, represented by Sigma Huda, Elena Khan, Salma Ali and other women's rights activists, filed three writ petitions--two by challenging the Constitution 14th Amendment on indirect election and allocation of seats among the political parties proportionately.
